Can anybody recommend a decent unit

Looked at JVC and Sony, but quite frankly the reviews aren't that great.

Perhaps I need to move up to a different media.

No serious video planned, so it doesn't have to be top of the line.
Something in the $200.00 - $300.00 range.

Thanks,

John

Don't think you can get there at that price but Dirk Halstead of Digital Journalist likes the Canon XH G1 and XH A1 Camcorders.

I just bought a Kodak Zi8 for $170 for casual, walking around video. It shoots 1080p HD onto SD cards. It has a jack for an external mic, a tripod mount and comes with an HDMI cable. It shoots .MOV files that won't cause you problems with codecs, etc like the hard drive cameras. The quality is surprisingly good.

Worth looking in to:

The Kodak seems pretty decent.

Thanks for the link.

Its a lot of fun and extremely easy to use. The best bang-for-your-buck video camera around.

It has a 720P 60fps mode thats shoots some cool slo-motion. Oh yeah, the image stabilization is pretty impressive. The lack of zoom range is the biggest drawback.
