Soooo... I'm thinking of jumping ship over to Nikon. Long story, wont get into it. In any event, what is the thing with Nikon adding 'movie modes' to their dslr bodies? The D300 looks like it might be a stretch financially for me, but the d90 and the d5000 are a little closer to my budget if I want to buy brand new. What is the opinion on the matter? Video capability is coming to a DSLR near you, part of the convergence of still and video in a serious way. Buckle up! Nikon did it first with the D90. Canon did it second with the 5D Mark II. Not sure which came next, the Nikon D5000 or the Canon Rebel T1i, but they are entry-level bodies with movie mode. I know the Canon Rebel isn't truly HD like the video on the 5D II. |

Well the D5000 has it as well. I know, I said that in my post! The D5000 is an entry-level DSLR; I don't know how that translates to what you're used to with your Oly. |

Chris...if you are going to do it...pick-up the D90...just because it has the focusing motor...which will help you with older AF lenses....that are actually cheaper and more readily available... The D90 and D300 are almost similar....D300 more pro-style body...51 point AF...faster shutter speeds....but ISO and image quality about equal.... Can not tell you about the D5000....but I would still do the D90..... Already giving up on OLY...??? Good luck... --------------------------- Tony C. |

We recently got a d5000 and are quite happy with it. My only other lenses are older low-end kit-lens quality, so even though they would be manual focus only I opted for the d5000 determined to put he savings over the d90 towards new lenses—especially after seeing what the kids’ new 60mm micro can do…If money wasn’t such a factor, I would’ve gone with the 90… They have a ways to go with getting the live view to work well (imho) (we almost went with the Sony because of it) (the 90 is supposed to be the same quality)... The software makers are still coming out with the ability to handle the RAW format on the D5000—haven’t looked in a few weeks but it has been limited at first… The flip down LCD can be handy...be careful, it only turns certain ways (it’s plenty solid enough but I’m still worried that sooner or later)...but I’ve gotten real used to pulling it down to change settings quickly and/or shooting, changing back and/or a quick view without having to tilt the camera to look at the back... As far as the movie mode...sigh, sign of the times...it works well, nice quality...and surely it will come in handy for quick and dirty recording needs but with the price of camcorders nowdays they could’ve left it off and put the money in something else...but that’s another debate...for what it’s worth, note the following out of the manual: “Each movie file can be up to 2GB in size. The maximum length is 5 min for movies with a frame size of 1280x720, 20 min for other movies; note that depending on memory card write speed, shooting may end before this length is reached.” “When used in live view or movie-recording mode for extended periods, the temperature of the camera’s internal circuits may rise, resulting in image noise and unusual colors...to prevent damage to the camera’s internal circuits, recording will end automatically before the camera overheats…” Anywho, hope this helps... patrick. |
