Whats the Photoshop of video editors?

Would run on a Mac Pro 2.92 quad, 16gig memory. 7 terabyte disk with 100 gig stripped over two disks, so compute power should not be a problem.editing?


Oh, what are the must read books on video editing.

Final Cut Pro. If you hate FCP, there's Premiere Pro CS4, and at last resort I'd recommend Avid Media Composer, but Final Cut Pro is by far the most common editing application used by 5D shooters editing on Apple hardware.

Get Pluraleyes if you run dual system sound - it's a plugin that automatically syncs audio tracks, so you can record a high-quality track on an external recorder (Zoom H4n or the like) and then automatically match it up with the crappy audio recorded on the 5D's internal microphone.

There's a lot of good information on Phillip Bloom's blog and on the dedicated DV Info forum (which is where I learned nearly everything I know about shooting video with DSLRs). DV Info is to videography what TPF is to photography - a wealth of information from a large group of skilled professionals and amateurs.

As far as books, I don't really know. The video school I went to didn't teach out of a textbook; we had a few PowerPoint slides to explain the basic rules, but most of our education came from hands-on shooting and editing. I think I learned the most from watching professional video (movies, television, commercials, et cetera) from a technical mindset, much like dissecting photographs. What are the camera movements? When two people are having a conversation, what angles did the director of photography use? When did the camera move in for the closeup? When did it pull back? How is the video paced - fast cuts (less than three seconds in between) or slow cuts? And so on, and so forth.

Building it on a bare bones Mac Pro with memory and drives from OWC just a little over 1k not counting the Mac Pro. What cost many beaver pelts, Eizo CG243W. Am using SoftRAIID for stripping and disd manement chores.

I am a HUGE supporter of Premier Pro. I have hear some great things about FCP for the Mac. I think either software will allow you to do 10x's more then what you will probably ever need. You should be able to find good support and plenty of forums with helpful info for both programs as well. I do know Premier Pro has a 30 day trial. you might be able to get the same for FCP. If you stay with those two choices your basically at Ford/Chevy or Canon/Nikon, ultimately you'll be please with either. Just find which one seems to "feel" better to you.

Adobe Premiere is the Photoshop of video editing but pretty involved. If you just want basic editing then Adobe Premier Elements is very easy to use and learn. Elements will do editing, titles, transitions, voice overs and music. For $99 it should Do more than you need.

I'm not sure about Premiere Elements but I know Final Cut Express wont edit 5D II footage without doing some conversions before you load it in.

Premiere Elements plays nicely with Neoscene if you choose to go that route - but since you're using Apple hardware I would still recommend Final Cut Studio.

I also go Final Cut Pro ... I have been using it for a long time in Video Production world and fully recommend it.

I also am very familiar with Avid Media Composer another great choice.

CS4 Premiere ... for me ... I haven't touched premiere since 6.0 ...

FYI - FCP at the moment is battling Avid for the top spot in the Broadcast realm.

Another FYI ... Avid is the best stable of all the choices.

I tried avid before, i coudn't get used to the way you imported video, too many selections. but i guess it's needed in the media world. I prefer premiere with after effects and encore for dvd burning. avid bought pinnacle studios or vice versa, have not looked at it since. can't stand pinnacle soft. crashes too much.

Pinnacle stinks ... stick with good ones.

The reason some people aren't use to Avid is because it uses a 3 point system as oppose to drag and drop like Premiere and Final Cut.

But Avid like I said has the best media management.

I for one use Final Cut Studio a whole lot more. And I also use After Effects for any extra Effects.

From what I've seen and heard from the few people that I know that shoot and edit video, Final Cut Studio is the editor of choice.

Adobe Premiere on CS5 is pretty close to FCP from what I have heard from a couple part time video photographers. I have read that Premiere CS5 has gone under some changes for the better.
