OK, so I am totally "into" this style of processing...very vibrant and colorful! I don't want to direct link her images here, but please look at LAUREN CLARK PHOTOGRAPHY.

I think she is based out of the Lubbock area and I think she would be a great asset to the TPF community!

Anyhow...any thoughts/ideas on how to achieve this great, vibrant look?

I know it isn't for everyone, but all that I have shown it to absolutely LOVE it!

it's all about those great curves!

i think she may also be using curves in her processing, too.

Looks a lot like TriCoast's stuff, and they are members here. And they have a set of actions and DVD on how to use them.

Lauren...what a sweetheart and quite an up and coming talent. Here she is with her husband.

As far as the colors, TriCoast has some actions and tutorials that teach you that. Also look at the Boutwell's Totally Rad Action set.

I have a lomo action that does kinda similar to that... hers look alot better than mine usually turn out though!! lol

I really like her work.
She gets some really blue skies, far bluer that I get in College Station with a polarizer and shooting at the best times.

While in Cabo a few weeks ago, I shot without a polarizer while doing a beach shoot and found that ISO 50 gave me really nice rich blues... Never really used ISO 50 before, but did on a recommendation by the photographer I was working with. It definitely made a difference.

I noticed in Cancun and Cozumel I got gorgeous blue skies, rich with color.
Here it's nothing but light blue and hazy light blue....

Hmmm...maybe that's what we need to figure out....How do we turn smog into a crisp, beautiful deep blue?!?! There is no doubt that she is doing a great job! I'm an avid daily Blog watcher of her's now!

I was reading something she wrote a while ago, so don't hold me to it, but I believe she said she does a lot of that in camera. My suggestion - shoot her an email. Photogs are usually happy to talk about themselves. ;o)

It's probably more of isolating the areas in Photoshop. I tried a couple of things on a photo I have here at work...the selection wasn't big so this was all I had.

I copied a single channel from the channels panel, for the red balls the Green Channel, and copied it on another layer above the original and set it to Color Dodge. Took the opacity down to 55. This helps bring out the red balls without loosing alot of detail, also makes the grass pop in this situation. You lose detail when adjusting curves and levels in the original layer trying to make colors stand out so i figured there is a better way without destroying the original image data.

Then you can erase the areas that don't need Color Dodge...for this picture the subjects and the sky.

For the sky I took the Red channel and copied it into another layer(on top of the rest) and set it to color burn at 100% opacity.(note*when copying channels make sure the background or main layer is selected first) From here I used Hue/Saturation adjustments and colorized the layer until the blue looks like that super polarized blue should look. Erased everyyhing except the sky and our jeans. The jeans may need some Dodging done to the Color Burn layer.

From here you can isolate the subjects by copying the Channel that has the lightest contrast on the skin. I used another Red Channel for this and set it to Soft Light at 50 percent...erased everthing except the subjects.

You can see the halo around the balls as I didn't spend alot of time on this.
I noticed some halos on some of Laurens images but this could be from a certain action.
Yes those images look very fine!

I read her blog. She shows pics out of camera, then a basic color correction, then a "Art version". She says it's done in Photoshop. Her originals, look like everyone elses..

I love her stuff also! I think a good part of it is her choice of background locations! Did you notice that they are differen't and have that grunge depraved look to them, not to mention some are quite colorful to begin with. I think she spends a lot of time searching for locations as do a lot of us.

I have found one quick (and probably dirty) way to enhance colors in a picture is to duplicate the layer and set the top layer to "overlay" (and probably lower the opacity as per your tastes).

Some interesting ideas and suggestions...I'm gonna have to spend some time playing around a bit! I'd be hard to convince that most of her photos are that vibrant out of camera - I know the 5d has some amazing dynamic range, but I don't think it has that much!

Anyhow...has anyone sent her an invitation to join here? If she watches her site traffic, I'm sure she'll notice a few hits from here so maybe she'll start peakin in 'round here!

So I still have a long way to go....this is a quick edit from a TTD shoot with my wife this past summer. The processing includes a couple TriCoast actions and a Lomo action....

The techniques used on the Xmas ornament pictures are pretty interesting. It shows that there is more than one way in PS to go about getting similar results. This is my 3 minute job on the same pictures doing nothing except writing a curve on the A and B channels in LAB. I locked down everything from neutral to the most positive parts of the skin, and then steepened everything out of that range an absurd amount. I think it gives a similar result in much less time.
