I am going to be doing a mother/daughter shoot this coming weekend in a park with a lot of trees, an untreated patio and play ground. Can I get suggestions on what color clothing they should wear to help make for good pictures. I have attached pictures I was sent of the park and a picture I took of the two of them at a wedding.

I would suggest some classic and standard, khaki's and white or black shirts. Maybe some with dark shoes on and some barefoot. . . .cute little girl!

Thanks for bumping! I didn't see this the first time around. I like earth tones. A sage green would look great on both of them with their skin tones. Clients usually know what they look good in. I usually say to wear something similiar, but not exactly like each other. Like Donna said, khakis are good. Even one in khaki pants/the other khaki skirt or those pants that only come to the calf (can't think of the name right now)No strong patterns or bold colors. Outdoor/Green backgrounds - I also agree with Donna on the white probably being your strongest. Little girls look great in long dresses. So even if the mom's shirt matched the color in the girl's dress, that would look great too. (unless mom has a dress similar - long flowing - that would be great also) sorry - I'm not a whole lot of help :) have fun and post some pics when you get them!

Am I crazy in thinking yellows and white? I think those would make them stand out more from the back ground rather than using the toned down colors.

Yes, but that's a whole 'nother thread....
I think a nice light yellow would be good too. Just not anything to bright that would take the attention away from their faces.

I like a muted orange/pumpkin type of color on the little girl. A muted yellow would go well too. I'd go for some "fall colors".
I'm also a sucker for dark greens and black would look really good also. | | | | | MIA Mod

I disagree about the green. I just worry that they would almost blend in to the backgrounds sometimes. I'm not big on white - I have an aversion to it and try to tell clients to avoid it when possible - too much washing out and it tends to make them look larger (something no woman ever wants). Darker colors are more slimming. I like the fall colors idea. I also like it when they don't match but rather compliment each other. There's no reason why they have to wear the same color. I had some family photos that looked great with the mom in yellow and daughter in white and the dad in a striped shirt with the yellow, white and blues. It worked. Just MHO. | | | | | Uber Poster

Well, I'm the odd man out, but I try to get them to stick with classic looks so their picture won't be so outdated so fast. How many times do you look back at high school pictures and your clothes and say "What was I thinking?" Something like denim and white or black or khaki's never go out of style . . . . the portrait will still look great 10 years later, no matter how their living room decor or taste in clothing may change.

| I agree with Donna that you should stick with classics. Not only to ensure a viewable portrait all year long, for many years, but also to keep the focus where it needs to be...on the subject and not their clothing. I also agree with Ciarrai in that when given the right outfits, it is amazing how well they can flow together without having to be exactly alike. Just usually hard to find clients who can pull that off. My last engagement session they didn't wear the same thing but I loved the combination.

An old film scan where they had the same exact sweater, just different colors. Sorry about the small size - all I have on me at the moment..

anytime Mark. I know Donna does a lot more families than I do, I'm sure she has better examples of the different clothing.

I'm a bright colors guy. Try red, blue and yellow. If you do any black and whites, then try dark and light colored clothing to give it more contrast. | | | | | Uber Poster
