The ANSWER to traffic problems - 09-17-2007, 08:15 AM

I, Todd, present here for the first time ever my solution to the traffic problem.

First, the problem;
We'll take an imaginary city, called... the city... and this city has a population of exactly 3,000,000 people.
Now that means that every morning and afternoon, about 90% of the city travels to and from work. I say 90%, because the other 10% is either on the night shift or working from home. That is 2,700,000 people driving to work every morning, and 2,700,000 people driving home every evening. Lots of rush hour traffic.

Now, the solution;
Open everything 24/7. Run the city on three shifts. 8am to 4pm, 4pm to midnight, and midnight to 8am. 3,000,000 people working in a city run 24/7 in three shifts means that now you have 2,000,000 people on the roads at each shift change, but here is the clincher, 1,000,000 are driving to work, and 1,000,000 are driving home. BOOM!!! I just cut traffic in any one direction in third.

Now I know what y'all are going to say, "What about spending time with the family" or "What about spending time with the kids". My answer to that was that I said "EVERYTHING" is open 24/7 running on three shifts. You work the second shift? Your kids go to school on the second shift. You go to the bank on the third shift. You get your driver's liscense on the third shift.

Running three shifts also spreads out the demand of services, preventing "rushes". Lunch rush will now only have 1,000,000 people instead of 3,000,000 people. Businesses still get the same amount of business, but it is spread more evenly over the 24 hours. Which means that they can still employee 30 employees, but work them in shifts as well instead of having all 30 there at once.

In this new city of 24/7, I would like to be the first to volunteer to work the 4pm to midnight shift. I hate the sun, and burn easily, and so that shift would give me the least amount of exposure to the sun.

Brilliant I tell you, just brilliant.

Todd

I have a better plan. When I am on the road, all other vehicles must remain parked, out of my way.

Having been a graveyard shift worker for many years in my past, I would love it if things were open 24/7. However, not *everything* can be done easily in the dark. I prefer not to rough in a house in the dark.

I'm doing my part. I work 7:30 pm until 6:00 am and have for the last 10 years.

How would you run a baseball team? You could play three innings every eight hours, but what do you do with only three guys on the field?

in this 'city' think about the energy demand needed to run it all 24/7. the cost just to keep a store open (without employees) would triple. and since you're running on an entire day, you would need more employees - granted you'd get more business. I see where you're going with this and yes may be brilliant. perhaps when energy and time is cheaper.
