Ok soooooooo.... - 03-15-2010, 09:20 AM

i have really been wanting to get some lighting for outside, so as the sun goes down my flash isnt the only thing i have to rely on. But i am extremely un-faniliar with lighting so i was hoping you guys could shed some "light" on the subject.

I have looked around on B&H but i get lost i am not sure what comes with the set up i am looking at and what type of bulbs to get or anything. I could really use some direction.

I thought about just getting flood lights but i hate that yellow tint they give off.

anyone?

I am thinking battery powered would be nice because i wont always have somewhere to plug into right? but a flood light type of setup but something that wont cast a yellow light.

Your camera has a setting for tungsten lighting. It would remove the yellow cast. Your bigger problem though is that to get enough light from tungsten lights you will either need to plug them into 110v, use a power inverter in a vehicle, or use a generator. Anything battery powered will either not be enough light or will quickly drain the battery.

well ... if you are looking for something just to fill here and there ... the Speedlights are pretty nice with the Pocket Wizards ... but is a bit costly.

Then if you go up to the Battery Generators for strobes you get up there in cost.

I have fallen in to the many Speedlight shooting ... and Don they seem to get about 75-100 shots before the beeping starts telling me the lights are loosing battery.

It might help if you give a budget. For instance, you could get an Alien Bee beginner kit for 350 ish and add a battery/inverter setup for anothe 300ish and you would have a very nice portable setup with lots of shooting power and a fair amount of shooting time. Would also work in full day light too...

I was referring to continuous lighting, not flash. Hook a 12v 500 watt Halogen to a car battery and it will drain it in no time at all.

Alienbee with Vegabond was my primary lighting kit
But the Vegabond is too heavy that my assistant hated it so much
Now we switched to Elinchrom Quadra. A lot happier and it's got LED day light balanced light that I can shoot video or still.
I actually like the yellow continuous light. This is what I do, shift the WB setting to Tungsten and shoot with yellow light. You will create some moody light in overcast day.
I have a link that I shot last month at Portland, OR

Jusselin,
This is a cool little setup to give you an idea. You can use it with a speedlight. If you end up wanting one then you can get a better deal if you piece it out using different parts and don't buy the kit.

Small LiteDome Kit with Swivel and Stand

Yeah, that's it. Everybody wears something different but the same, you know?

Can you name the movie the quote is from?
