There's a house near where I live in Flower Mound that had a Dallas based company come out and put LED lights on a large tree in their yard. I talked with the owner one day as I was driving by and she said there are about 40,000 LED's on the tree and that it takes a grand total of ONE dollar per day to light (she leaves it on 24/7). It takes more energy to run a load of laundry than to power the tree for 24 hours.
Anyway, here's a shot during dusk and one at night. The tree is SO bright you can see it for miles.
Dusk when you could just start seeing the LED's:
At night... You can see the normal colored "white" lights on the house to the left:
Very cool tree. The glow is something to see.

Nice! Joe, Didn't you take a picture of a Christmas tree last year out in the snow, it was blue I believe. This picture some how reminds me of it. | | | | | Press shutter, hear click

Yeah, in fact for the first time I made our Christmas cards this year and that was the front cover. The wife made me adjust the color so it was red instead of the bluish/purple. | | | | | Member

Wow that thing is LIT UP. 40,000 LED's for 1$/day... Now imagine lighting up an entire house like that "Griswold" style. ;)

Absolutely beautiful!
Love the sky in that first one. It would be good even without the lights in the tree. | | | | | Living in the Light

I like both images, but the tree in the second one is unreal. Any idea how much she paid for that?

I've got to wonder what it cost to put the lights on the tree in the first place.
Very beautiful shot, Joe. I see that you're putting that D3 to good use.

I'd definitely like to know too. I'd love to pop out there one night and take a couple of shots.

_/oe | Ah yes! I know the area quite well. Used to ride my motorcycle through there on the weekends. Of course, now that my kiddo was born, I haven't gotten to ride that motorcycle in too long. I guess that's why I haven't been out on Shiloh road lately =) Well, except to eat a Christina's.

Great shots, Joe.. especially that first one.. sweet, sweet sky.
HGTV had a DFW house (forget where) on their "What's With That Decked Out Christmas House?" special this year... the house was entirely lit with LEDs.. and had music, light show, all of it... and she said the total bill for the MONTH was only $100 more than her November bill.

That's amazing. All the way up to the tips of the branches. I'll bet that wasn't cheap to have done. We'll have to swing by and check that out.
Thanks for posting, Joe and Albert.

ok, it's a kinda cool, wet, rainy, misty kind of night and I'm using my monopod instead of a tripod (idiot!) to shoot this tree. my 11 year old son is a real trooper, but he's ready for some hot cocoa on a night like this and here's what I came up with.
Joe - thanks for the heads up, the tree is beautiful, your sunset shot with the tree is just amazing. The street it's on is McMakin from FM407 amd Shiloh from FM1171 if anyone else wants yo go.....
Albert - mine had some glow tonight like yours, I guess because of the mist.

When I talked to the owner they said the absolute best time to photograph the tree is right before sunup. I haven't tried it yet due to the weather but when it clears up a bit I'll take a stab at it. | | | | | Forum Regular

Before sunup? The street next to the tree lies north and the other west - what angle might you use? I guess down the street by the house? I didn't go on the owners property tonight...... | | | | | Random Pixel Generator

If anyone is interested- a "superbrite" LED uses about 30mA current or 100mW of power. mW = milliwatt or 1/1000th of a watt. The entire tree, with no other losses assumed (not possible), consumes about 40 watts of power with 40,000 LED's on it. It must take a pretty stout DC power supply to power it but all things considered that's pretty impressive.
Nice shots Joe

Nice shots Joe | That would be 4000 watts.
100mW*40000=4000 watts.
Now I see why such a tree better be LEDs!
Also, DC is not required. I have some sets of LED Christmas lights and they use AC... you could see them flicker a bit because of it. | | | | | Random Pixel Generator

As much as I hate to tackle another simple math problem... 4 kW x 24 hours = 96 kWH or about 1.5 days of my normal home electrical usage. Not too shabby...
