Lonestar Park Wednesday June 15 - 06-13-2005, 01:04 PM

I know a few people have shot at, and others have talked about shooting at, Lonestar Park in Grand Prairie. Weather permitting, I'm going there to shoot this Wednesday evening. If anyone wants to meet there post a reply to this thread. Nothing formal or official, but it would be nice to meet some of you if you are so inclined.

General admission is $3 and races start at 6:30pm.

David

Hmm...I might, but I'm supposed to go to the beach out near Pilot Point that day. It will depend on what time we are looking at getting back. I will let you know on Tuesday evening.

Hi David,

Have you ever shot there before? I'm wondering what kind of photo access we'll be able to get and how much shooting before it gets too dark.

I'm interested.

I've never shot there before, but a few others have and said they had free access to shoot but were asked not to shoot the people placing bets. I've been there 1 time for a night time race and if my memory serves me correct, the lighting was pretty good. If you get there early enough we should have 2 hours or so of daylight. It will be a learning experience. :-)

Joe, that big honking glass will be really good for the on-track stuff. Everything else is really close.

I went out there with Craig/Karen and Nancy last Friday. Neat place to shoot. Have a good time. Pay the extra few bucks to go upstairs and sit down in the A/C.

I shot some there lasty weekend. When they are on the dirt track, you are about 15 yards away from them. If you shoot on the weekends (when the first post time is 1:35), you get great lighting as the sun is behind you and really lets you capture the action!

I got there late, so it was getting dark. I had to shoot at ISO 800 and f/2.8 for this shot here.

My wife won $70 right when we got there, so that payed for the beer and parking and to get in :D I did not see anyone from here and I was right at the finish line, but I did get there late so that might be why.

Great shot! I really like the pano you took as well.

How crowded was it there? Were you able to move around easily?

This looks like a fun shoot, scenic too.

Thanks for posting!

It was not to crowded, you could move around fine. I had my wife and my 2yr son so that kept me from moving around more then anything :x
You can get right up to the finish line. I did not use the 200mm end of my lens that much at all.

Srini, your shots in the gallery are great! You really were able to use the reach of that 100-400 well. Very nice set of photographs, very colorful.

I'm going to try and go this Wednesday.

Thanks for the comments guys.. regarding the lens, I used a 100-400L lens on my 20D and for the action shots I was pretty much at 400, while the near shots, it was at 100... a 70-200 would be great too, you are right next to the track...

Photo number eight looked interesting ... how large any area containing the wildflowers? Anything other than Indian Blankets and thistles?

This was a place behind the race track, Hunter Ferrell and Story, very pretty place with lots of wild flowers, there is nothing but dead bush now, the pictures were taken a month ago in that gallery.

Great shots!

I have to apologize, I started this thread and then couldn't go. I got sick and spent Wednesday afternoon and evening "praying to the porcelain god"... enough said.

I was in bed most of Thursday and was able to drag myself to a boxing match in FW. I'll post a few of those photos later tonight.

I hope to meet you guys another time.

David
