Ok my desktop wont boot it says registry file is MISSING OR CORUPT. Tried the repair TWICE the second time it offfered to restore from a previous point. Well that started at 6pm last night and was still the same screen this morning. Got it to boot to another HD (xp) and got my data off so the drive is fine.
Question is if I get the upgrade version of 7 will it let me do a clean install on a new drive?? or I may just keep bootin to the XP drive lol | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google or Vibrant advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

I would strongly recommend a fresh install of Windows 7. I know it's a bit of a pain, but in the long run you'll be better off.

Agreed ... Even in my past windows experience with 98 and XP ... when something major was corrupted with the system files ... it was best to Re-Format the HardDrive and Re-Install Windows.

In most cases you will only need to enter the serial number code from your legal copy to enable the upgrade. Although I must say I haven't tried this myself. Can you afford to write over one drive or do you have an extra one to test with?

Yes, you are going to need the serial of the product you are upgrading from to upgrade.
Or if you have the original OEM Discs of your copy of windows ... just re-install that.

Let me make one suggestion. In my experience, corrupt files, especially registry files, do not happen for no reason. I noticed you mentioned the restore took, or is taking, a very long time. This just screams hard drive problems to me. Have you run a through hard drive diagnostic? Just because the area of the drive where your data is works fine does not mean the entire drive is OK. It would really stink to do a clean install of 7 only to find out it was a bad drive.
Allan
PS. You do know that installing the OEM version marries it to your current hardware so it can not be activated again should you change a significant amount of your hardware (for example changing your hard drive and motherboard), right? | | | | | Account Closed Per User Request

Do yourself a favor and replace the drive as well. Better now than to do all this and have it fail again. | | | | | Premium Member

For me, Windows 7 has been the most stable version since Win XP SP2. Enjoy. Don't forget your anti-virus (I use AVG free).

Sorry, I'm an Outlook user on the Windows platform. But to be honest, I don't send much email from the PC. Mostly use my Mac(s) for that.
