Non-Profit Ad campaign Pricing - 08-19-2009, 09:28 AM

Howdy TPFers...a friend living in Israel sent me this question and I was hoping someone here with the knowledge could help...

"I recently was approached by a non-profit organization to freelance--they are after three specific photos of a Palestinian man, womman and father with child.

I'm relatively new to the photography scene and wondering what I should charge for such a request. Also, can you say a word about format--what format photos should I deliver them in? TIFF, JPEG, etc. They want to use them as an ad on the Chicago transit. Also, would you put your copyright mark on the photo?

Thanks for any suggestions you can give."

No, you are giving at "no cost" to you and your name; Write it off and give the a value of your no cost so you both know what they got.

Are you saying she should not charge the company? I'm not sure I understand what you are saying.

Don't give your photos away !!!!!
Just because they are a non-profit doesn't mean they don't have any money.
You think they do things for free? Not on your life. Not-for profit only means that the money they take in during the year has to be spent and there can't be a "profit" at the end of the year. Who do you think they spend that money on?
They spend it on advertising so people will give them more money.....
I worked for one of the Metroplexes largest not-for-profit agencies and they did good things, but they had lots of money to spend..
Not-for-profit people get really good at whining about you giving them your services, etc. Don't do it. Charge them the going rate. I'd start at $1000 per image for use on the CTA and negotiate from there.

Thanks, Captain Tom!

If they insist on a wholesale buyout of the images, instead of licensing for just the CTA - what would be the going market rate? Or would you advise against that no matter what?

X5=

And these prices are low in the industry... they should know that.

or

They could send a photog from Chicago to shoot, pay the same for the pictures plus his expenses.

No soup for you Tom; :P lol

Mica, I assumed since you were working with non profit ,you were doing it at no profit. It doens't matter, you asked two questions only. What format and if you put your logo on it.

1. you should ask them what format they need it.
2. still no logo on your photo.

Good luck with it.
